Experience throwing pots on the wheel and enjoy having one-to-one tuition on your own wheel throughout the course as you learn the important techniques and processes for completing pots. (residential available)
Tall pots with surface textures - Gordon Cooke at West Dean :: May 27, 2013 to May 31, 2013
Create tall elegant monolithic forms in stoneware clays using slab construction with stoneware clays. Surfaces are enhanced with textural detail and coloured slips to give a finish without the use of glazes. Coiling, press-moulding and other techniques are also demonstrated.

Wheel thrown lidded forms in porcelain - Chris Keenan at West Dean :: June 06, 2013 to June 09, 2013
Explore the making of a variety of lidded forms - for a butter dish, teapot, ginger jar etc. Working with Limoges porcelain you will devise and work on individual projects to make a group of pots incorporating different types of lids. There may be time to develop handles, knobs and spouts too.
Smoke and fire Raku making and firing techniques. Alison Sandeman at West Dean :: June 16, 2013 to June 21, 2013
Cover basic hand building techniques and throwing on the potter's wheel using a range of Raku and stoneware clays. Develop your skills and ideas with one-to-one tuition and advice. Raku pieces will be made in the first two days then biscuit fired ready for glazing and firing using the exciting outdoor Raku firing methods. (residential possible)
Parts and pieces throwing sculptural forms on the wheel - Virginia Scotchie at West Dean :: July 01, 2013 to July 05, 2013
Learn new ways of using the wheel by throwing closed forms and geometric shapes. You use the wheel as a tool for the creative investigation of shapes joining them together using slip and scoring techniques. Small parts and pieces in stoneware clay can then be assembled into sculptural objects. (residential possible)

Sculptural ceramics and painterly surfaces - Carolyn Genders at West Dean :: July 27, 2013 to August 02, 2013
Explore your personal responses to the landscape of West Dean to develop sculptural forms working with white earthenware. You use drawings, photographs, small models and test pieces to evolve ideas for both shapes, surface decoration and texture. Oxide slips and colour washes are used to create painterly surfaces that add depth and textures to compliment the pieces created. (residential available)

Explore the intrinsic plastic nature of porcelain clay and develop an understanding of surface quality and pattern as you create forms inspired by manmade and natural surfaces. (residential available)

Experience working on the potter's wheel and learn how to prepare and work with clay. You are shown key techniques on the first day and, with your own wheel to practice on all weekend, can then develop your own designs inspired by the ceramic collection at West Dean. (residential available)

Explore a refreshing new way to make slip decorated colourful vessels. Terracotta clay slabs are decorated flat with richly coloured slips and then turned into vessels, giving a spontaneous feel to the shapes and forms.
A practical glazing and decorating weekend - Alison Sandeman at West Dean :: October 18, 2013 to October 20, 2013
Learn to glaze and decorate pots that you have either made on an earlier pottery course at the College or in your own studio. Guidance is given on making glazes from recipes, application of glazes and pigments and wax resist as decorating mediums.

Develop your own Japanese-inspired forms using the tutor's own methods for creating poetic and free-form ceramics. These include traditional throwing and the 'twist and cut' technique. (residential available)
Raku making decorating and firing techniques - Tim Andrews at West Dean :: October 27, 2013 to October 31, 2013
Experience the tutor's methods for forming Raku pots - either by hand-building or by throwing on the wheel - and try out various ways of burnishing the unfired surface using slips, including terra sigillata.(residential available)
