Fixing Light, Fixing Fire is a unique artistic collaboration between three nationally renowned professionals: David Jones, potter, Rod Dorling, art and architectural photographer and John Bell, theatre and exhibitions designer.

The project culminates in an innovative public exhibition at the Art Gallery & Museum opening on 23 November 2002 at the Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.

Primarily the project has provided a dynamic forum for the artists to create new work, the concept for which derived from debates between them whilst working on Jones' book: Raku - Investigations into Fire. To further explore their collaborative practice, the group aim to create an exhibition that probes ideas of expression, skill and craft in their respective disciplines of ceramics, photography and design.

Through the display of the new body of work, the show will primarily explore how fire and light may be intrinsic to the production of the art object. Bell's exhibition design, however, intends to question the traditional presentation of ceramics and photography in a public gallery space. Through the juxtaposition of Jones' beautiful raku fired ceramics and Dorling's stunning photographic transparencies, it will encourage a dialogue between two and three dimensionality and there will be predicated a questioning of the real and hyper-real.

In creating an environment for this discourse, Bell's design will also facilitate a multi-sensory experience for the visitor, evoking smell, sound and touch as well as images, particularly of the Raku firing process. The ideas for this interpretation have been inspired by the tradition and practices employed by the potter, photographer and designer and will ultimately develop out of the three-way discussions that occur as the exhibition evolves.

This project has been funded by Warwick District Council West Midlands Arts in consultation with Arts-Sense.
