Proposed new limits for Cadmium and Lead release in pottery and glass

10 Aug 2012

A consultation is being held regarding proposed new limits for Cadmium and Lead release in pottery and glass that is intended for use with food. Under these proposed new rules the lead release limit is lowered by 400 times the current one.

This will affect a lot of potters, especially those of us making functional wares and using commercial or own recipe lead based glazes. I think as many people as possible should have the opportunity to respond to this consultation.
In summary, the European Commission is looking into revising limits for the release of lead and cadmium from ceramic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, as currently laid down in Council Directive 84/500. The Commission are also considering including other materials, such as glass, in the new measure.
