Artist's StatementI am excited by curves – the sails of yachts in a strong wind, beautiful eyes, fine muscle-tone – these often give me the forms. The surfaces take me to dark places – stormy days, rock caves, black seas, thick forests – but where the light breaks through. I want the work to have an earthy, natural feel – primitive yet modern. To intrigue the viewer – to invite their touch. The process is as important to me as the work itself. Intimate contact at red-heat, to feel and direct the smoke, the excitement of revealing the combination of my intent with the random elements of raku. Current Work
One-off raku-fired pieces with highly burnished surfaces complemented with markings from smoke penetrating the clay body. The monochrome finish, whilst primitive in origin, stands its ground in the most modern home setting. Work currently available from:Worthing Art Gallery and Museum, Chapel Road, Worthing Green Tree Gallery, Haywards Heath, W Sussex Various nationwide art and ceramic fairs (see website for updated details). Technical Information
Work is thrown, hand-built, or moulded depending on my mood and inspiration, using a white clay-body able to withstand thermal shock. The surface is refined and subject to several burnishing stages. Terra Sigillata is often applied. Bisque firing is at ^06. A resist slip and glaze are applied and the work placed in a smoke-bin after heating to around 850 deg C. A final coat of conservation polish is applied. Career Background
