Artists statement

Artists statement

It is the intrigue of opposites that continually informs my practice, especially those of control and chaos. Through the making and firing processes, I push the material to its physical limits, frequently over them in order to produce structures, which reflect both a previous fragility synthesized with the strength of form.

Within ceramic traditions, I look primarily towards Western Cultures, especially Greek and Roman with their 'classically' proportioned forms, the roles of the ceramic vessels within these cultures as well as the making, surfacing and firing techniques they employed. Crazing in the work reflects the natural tension within the forms from their construction on the potters wheel.

Surfaces are constructed by layering five particled slips (terra sigillata) and subsequent length firings in combustible materials provide the pattern to the surfaces. All pots are wax polished to provide a tactile reward to the observer and gold leaf additions are made to create a sense of strength and resonance to the internal space
