Artist's Statement
Inspiration is from many sources; classical and primitive ceramics; archaeological pottery reconstructed; the colour of rusted metals; weathered wood and other exposed surfaces which have that rich patina of age; winter landscapes criss-crossed by hedges and trees; sun rise and sun set skies. Technical Information
My handbuilding technique is coiling with the occasional use of press moulds and throwing, though coiling is my preferred choice because of the slower considered pace; scraping and fettling as the pot takes shape. Burnishing then follows to form an irresistible tactile satin finish before the bisque firing. Pieces are then placed in saggars with copper, salt and sawdust creating an atmosphere which leaves unique marks and colour on each and every pot. This aspect of the work is very exciting as the pot is handed over to the vagaries of the firing. Sometimes I break completed bisque work from large forms to small square tiles and fire the fragments in different parts of the kiln piecing back together. The juxtaposition of the shards with tight abutment of joints I find visually very satisfying. This is part of my regular practise particularly in wall panel constructions.
