Artists Statement

Ancient pots are important because of their historical value. From excavated pots and vessels archaeologists have been able to deduce lots of details of the every day life and religious rituals of ancient cultures.

All these ancient vessels are based on archetypal forms and radiate a universal spirit. It is this kind of spirit I want to express in my work. My pots carry signs and symbols and tell stories about existence, relationships and communication, about origin and evolution.

My ceramic work is rich in contrasts:
light and dark
thin and thick
polished (burnished) and rough
colourful and non-colour (white)
opening and closing forms
curved shapes and straight lines
textured and smooth
All these characteristics can be found in nature and in human beings.

Current Work

Thrown porcelain vessels, and wall pieces, burnished, treated with terra sigillata and coloured with sulphates; fired in a saggar.

Technical Information

High biscuit firings (+/- 1100°C) in electric kiln. Saggar firings in a gaskiln at 600°C to 900°C.

History

Studied graphics and ceramics at art schools in Antwerp and Hasselt (Belgium). She participated in ceramic workshops with known ceramists like Takeshi Yasuda, Antonia Salmon, David Miller, Dave Roberts, Peter Lane, Arne Ase, Tjok Dessauvage and many others.

In 1987 she starts the association "Atelier Cirkel" where she organises several workshops in ceramics and other art disciplines.

After working as an assistant for Suzy Atkins her work develops fast:
She is invited for lectures, demonstrations and ceramic symposia in France, Italy, Japan, South-Korea, Sicily and the USA.

Her work has been honoured with several prizes in Belgium and abroad.

Since 1978 she has participated in many National and International exhibitions.

1957 - Born
1975 - 1976 - Exchange student in Pennsylvania, USA.
1976 - 1981 - Art School in Antwerp and Hasselt, Belgium GraficArts and Ceramics
1981 - 1984 - Art teacher in different schools in Antwerp
1984 - 1986 - College of Social Studies in Eindhoven. Works in several social and cultural organisations
1986 - Starts own studio.
1987 - Starts the Institute 'Atelier Cirkel' where she organises several artistic workshops and international summer workshops & masterclasses.
1987 - 1994 - Attends International workshops with David Miller, David Roberts, Tjok Dassauvage, Takeshi Yasuda, Antonia Salmon, Suku Park and others.
1989 - 2001 - Participates in many International Ceramic Fairs and Biennials.
1992 - Works as an assistant with Suzy Atkins in France.
1994 - 2001 - Gives several workshops about primitive firing techniques, paperclay and other techniques in France, Holland, Belgium and the USA.
1995 - Invited Artist for the JINRO International Ceramic Art Workshop in Seoul, Korea and the IWCAT workshop in Tokoname, Japan.
1996 - Demonstrations & Lecture at the International Ballardini Institute for Ceramic Art at Faenza, Italy.
1997 - Invited by the European Community (Caleidoscope Project) for an International Ceramic Congress at Caltagirone, Sicily.
1998 - Workshop for International Students at the University of Brussels (VUB). Invited as a panelist for the ceramic workshop in Wooster, Ohio, USA. Lecture & slide presentation at the International NCECA Conference, Texas, USA. Commission for the International Publisher, Kluwer, Belgium.
1998 - Member, National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, USA. Member of the "International Craft Design Association", Europe.
1999 - Invited for the International Ceramic Symposium at Burgstein, Austria.
2000 - Invited for workshops at Clay Art Center, New York, USA. Lecture and participation at 'Art in Clay' Hatfield House, UK. Participation in International Ceramic Symposium in Bechyne, Czech Republic.
2001 - Demonstration & Lectures, Eastern Tennessee State University. Lecture & slide presentation at the International NCECA Conference, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA
