Artist's Statement
My work draws upon observations of coastal landscapes and inspiration from vintage and modern objects to interpret compositions of line and colour into simple geometric designs for a range of unique, handcrafted cylindrical vessels. The slab process enables me to use earthenware clay as a canvas, where I apply layers of slips and oxides using printmaking techniques. Graduations of hues are spliced with highlights of bold colour that flow freely in contrast with the interior's solid, bold colour. Every shade introduced compliments the others to create a distinction and correspondence in the same instant. I encourage observers to touch and explore the vessels' different textures - a smooth and rough exterior juxtapose the glossy interior. My range of vessels are simple yet contemplative. They stand individually with style and elegance or as a small group, which collectively unite through colour, scale and movement to create a defined space.
Current Work
Work Generally Available from: Technical InformationEach vessel is slab-built using white earthenware clay. The surface patterns and textures are created using slips containg varying amounts of commercial stains. I fire in an electric kiln to 1000, an then each piece is sanded and glazed with a glossy earthenware glaze. I re-fire to 1120, before giving each piece a final sand and polish. Background History
