Artist's Statement

Boats, birds, chickens and tractors are some of the features of my surroundings, which inspire me to work with clay. I find it a challenge to recreate something I am drawn to in real life into a sculpture that captures the associated feeling.

I started to sketch the sailboats and cockle trawlers when I lived in Leigh-On-Sea on the Thames estuary. These ideas then became sculptures in clay as I tried to capture each of their characters. I still enjoy making the tugboats and yachts which are available throughout the UK from selected galleries.

In 2003 when I moved to the rural French countryside my new experiences and lifestyle became the inspiration for my work. I have made simple hand pinched bowls and spoons for the home, quirky pieces for the garden and range of wall mounted chickens. You can see a more diverse selection of work on my website including one off commissioned pieces and recent figurative sculptures.

Technical Information

Clayman special buff and Pottercrafts crank/raku, fired to 1150 deg.C. in an electric kiln. Various coloured slips, glazes and oxides.
